Saxman is a predominately Alaska Native Tlingit community set within the Tongass National Forest south of Ketchikan. It was founded in the late 19th century when residents of the traditional Tlingit villages of Cape Fox and Tongass decided to consolidate their communities at a newly built village location on Revillagigedo Island. The area remains rich with Alaska Native culture including the Saxman Totem Park, which includes an extensive collection of traditional totem poles, a totem carving center, a Tribal house, and the cultural hall.
