Bear Flats
Past Mosquito Lake and a few miles up a dirt road is Bear Flats, part of the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve and Important Bird Area. This is a great place to view waterfowl, swans, and shorebirds, as well as bears, wolves, and moose. Knee boots are necessary to walk out the short trail, but there are a couple of good views from the road and parking area.
Directions:
From Klukwan, head north on the Haines Highway for 5.5 miles. Turn right on Mosquito Lake Road and drive 2.2 miles. Just before the Mosquito Lake campground, veer left onto a dirt road. Continue 3.8 miles to the parking area at Bear Flats on the east side of the road.
