South Marble Island has numerous significant seabird colonies and is a haul-out location for Stellar sea lions, a federally endangered species. The island is carefully managed to protect the wildlife and is closed to boat and kayak landings. Many tour companies plan a stop near the island, to allow passengers to view the sea lions and colonies of nesting birds including Tufted Puffin, Pelagic Cormorant, Black-legged Kittiwake, Pigeon Guillemot, and Common Murre.

Directions:

South Marble Island can be accessed either from a tour or charter boat departing from the public dock at the National Park Visitor Center, a cruise ship, or a private vessel with a permit. Some tour companies can be used to arrange sea kayak transport to the more remote portions of the National Park including South Marble Island. Check with the National Park Service for authorized tour companies.

To get to the Glacier Bay Visitor Center from downtown Gustavus, head west on Gustavus Road toward Shooting Star Road (0.7 miles); turn rights onto Mountain View Road, and drive 2.8 miles to Park Road. Drive 4.4 miles and follow the signs to the Glacier Bay Visitor Center.
