CURRENT ACTION ALERT: Protect the Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
Called "America's Serengeti" for its tremendous biological productivity and diversity, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is one America's last big untouched ecosystems. The Refuge is home to 42 mammal species, including more than 120,000 caribou, 36 species of fish, and more than 160 species of birds. Although much of Alaska’s North Slope is already open to drilling, oil and gas interests continue to lobby hard to drill in the Refuge.
To permanently protect the coastal plain of the Arctic Refuge, Representative Edward Markey (D-MA) has introduced the Udall-Eisenhower Arctic Wilderness Act, HR 39. This bill would preserve the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as Wilderness in recognition of its extraordinary natural values and for the benefit of present and future generations of Americans. Urge your U.S. Representative to support the Udall-Eisenhower Arctic Wilderness Act to permanently protect the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
