Noted wildlife ecologist John Schoen will present an eight-week class entitled “Alaska Wildlife and Wild Lands” through Opportunities for Lifelong Education (OLE) starting October 3, 2024.
Course Description
This class will use lectures (incorporating high-quality images) and class discussion to address key conservation issues across the state from the temperate rainforests of the Tongass National Forest to Arctic Alaska. Expect to learn about Alaska’s bears and Pacific Salmon, the ecology of old-growth forests, and how Alaska’s intact ecosystems are being affected by resource development and climate change. Guest speakers include Pat Pourchot, Rick Sinnott, Erik Schoen, and others. This course will also describe the wildlife management decision-making process including the role of the Alaska Board of Game and the 1991 Intensive Management Law.
The Fall 2024 quarter wildlife class will be divided into eight sessions and some will include co-presenters. Classes will meet once a week at First Christian Church located at 3031 Latouche Avenue in Anchorage. Each class is 75 minutes long. Students are encouraged to attend in person, but may also attend via Zoom.
