Adjacent to Petersburg is Wrangell Narrows, a deep narrow waterway that is part of the Inside Passage used by both fishing vessels and the Alaska ferry system. You can view the narrows by land between Hungry Point and along a portion of the Mitkof Highway but Wrangell Narrows are best viewed by charter or tour boat. Contact the visitor’s information center for a list of available charter/tour companies to arrange a day trip on the narrows.
The area is also occasionally visited by humpback whales, orca, and a variety of other marine mammals. Likely bird observations include a wide variety of waterfowl, shorebirds, and seabirds like Red-necked Phalarope, Surf Scoter, Black-legged Kittiwake, White-winged Scoter, Bufflehead, Marbled Murrelet, Pigeon Guillemot, Harlequin Duck, Bonaparte’s Gull, Mew Gull, California Gull, Herring Gull, and Glaucous-winged Gull.
