Southeast Alaska Birding Trail Wrangell

LeConte Bay (Glacier)

Spot sea and shore birds and other marine mammals.

In 1980, the United States Congress designated almost one-half million acres as the Stikine-LeConte Wilderness. Located on the mainland midway between Wrangell and Petersburg, this Wilderness is home to the Stikine River and the LeConte Glacier, the southernmost tidewater glacier on the Pacific Coast. Icebergs from the glacier float in LeConte Bay and provide a safe place for pupping seals. The Bay is also a good place to spot sea and shore birds and other marine mammals.

Directions:

Contact a local charter service from Wrangell or Petersburg to view the LeConte Glacier.
