Harbor Mountain Road takes you from sea level to the subalpine zone over a 5.5 mile route. The trail continues into the alpine areas and drops back in elevation to Sitka over a 6.2 mile hiking route. There are numerous road-side pull-offs located along the road and including a picnic site with outhouse located near mile 5, about ½ mile before the trailhead. The route crosses a variety of habitats including young and mature spruce forests, open meadows, and subalpine and alpine habitats.

Directions:

From Sitka, drive 3.2 miles north on Halibut Point Road. Turn right on Harbor Mountain Road/Forest Service Road 7576 and drive 5.5 miles to the end of the road and trailhead for Harbor Mtn/Gavan Hill Trail.
