Haines Highway North
The Haines Highway North is a stretch of the Haines Highway between the Porcupine Trail Turnoff Bridge and the international border station. In this area, you can find different subspecies than in other places in Southeast Alaska including the Chilkat Fox Sparrow and Cismontane Dark-eyed Junco.
The area is also good for birds normally found in the interior such as Black-capped Chickadee. Additionally, there are waterfowl like Barrow’s Goldeneye and Trumpeter Swan nesting in the river valley along the road. Be sure to bring your passport if you plan to cross the border with Canada.
Directions:
From Klukwan, head north on the Haines Highway. This site is located along the Haines Highway between mile 26.3 at Porcupine Creek and the U.S./Canada international border at mile 40.2.
