Southeast Alaska Birding Trail Petersburg

Little Dry Island

Excellent habitat for shorebirds and waterfowl.

Little Dry Island is located on the Stikine River Delta. Within the Stikine-LeConte Wilderness, there is a Forest Service-maintained cabin available by reservation. The tidal meadows and mudflats provide a lot of excellent habitat for shorebirds and waterfowl, particularly during the spring migration.

Directions:

From Petersburg, drive 31 miles to Blaquiere Point, then with either a skiff or sea kayak, head northeast to Little Dry Island. This cabin is located on the south side of Little Dry Island, on the Stikine River Delta within the Stikine-LeConte Wilderness. It is 12 miles by air or boat from Wrangell, or 2.5 miles from the Blaquiere boat ramp on the southeast corner of Mitkof Island. Access to the cabin generally requires a 15-foot tide for a shallow draft boat or a 17-foot tide for a float plane. Tides affect access to this cabin. Please consult local tide tables when planning your trip.
