Southeast Alaska Birding Trail Petersburg

Ohmer Creek Trail

The varied habitats can provide a wide array of bird species typical of Mitkof Island.

Ohmer Creek Trail begins at a small parking area off the Mitkof Highway at approximately milepost 22. This gravel trail follows the creek and crosses Woodpecker Cove Road (#6280) near its junction with the highway, leading through old-growth spruce and hemlock forest to a floating bridge over a beaver pond and on through muskeg before connecting with the Snake Ridge Road.

A loop can be made by walking back to the parking area via the roads. The varied habitats can provide a wide array of bird species typical of Mitkof Island. A Forest Service campground is located just south of the trailhead providing primitive camping.
