Southeast Alaska Birding Trail Skagway

West Creek Road

See American Redstart, Red-breasted Sapsucker, thrushes, chickadees, warblers, grouse, and woodpeckers.

The West Creek Road ascends from the lower Taiya River upslope along West Creek through alder woodlands and spruce forests. It is a steep gravel road and 4-wheel drive is recommended. During the summer season, you can see American Redstart, Red-breasted Sapsucker, thrushes, chickadees, warblers, grouse, and woodpeckers.

Directions:

Follow Dyea Road to the Taiya River Bridge about 8 miles from the Klondike Highway intersection. Cross the bridge and continue on Dyea Road to the West Creek Bridge, about 2 miles. There is a small parking area just before the bridge. Across the bridge, turn left onto West Creek Road which quickly ascends the hillside. About 2 miles up the road there is a small parking area with a footbridge that leads to an undeveloped trail.
