Petersburg has a lot to offer and easily supports visitors wanting to explore the area including outfitters, charters and stores to support your visit. There are three harbors close to town supporting the canneries and fishing fleet which provide the homeport to over 400 commercial fishing and sport fishing vessels. The Visitor Information Center and the Marine Mammal Center are easily accessible to provide information for visitors. In addition to the town of Petersburg, there are 6 other birding sites within walking distance of downtown Petersburg and can be accessed by sidewalks or trails including: Wharf Park, Eagle’s Roost Park, Nature Boardwalk, Hungry Point Trail, Hungry Point-Nordic Drive, Sandy Beach. Approximately 130 bird species have been detected in Petersburg, including: Bald Eagle, Common and Barrow’s Goldeneye, Harlequin Duck, Red-breasted Merganser, Common Mergansers and Surf, Black and White-winged Scoter, Pigeon Guillemot, Marbled Murrelet and a wide variety of gull species. Passerines include the Eurasian Collared-dove, Cedar Waxwing, Lincoln Sparrow, Brown Creeper, and Tree Swallow. Near the ball field an occasional Killdeer or Wilson’s Snipe can be sighted. The muskegs near the airport have had interesting species now and then such as Northern Hawk Owl, Short-eared Owl, or Willow Ptarmigan in the winter.
