Southeast Alaska Birding Trail Petersburg

Hungry Point—Nordic Drive

The highest numbers of birds are usually seen on an outgoing tide.

Hungry Point is located at the junction of Fredrick Sound and Wrangell Narrows. Strong tidal exchanges at this site create an exchange of rich waters attracting a variety of waterfowl and seabirds including Bonaparte’s Gull, Glaucous-winged Gull, Short-billed Gull, three scoter species, Harlequin Duck, Pigeon Guillemot, Black Turnstones, and many other bird species. The highest numbers of birds are usually seen on an outgoing tide as the outflowing water from the Narrows especially provides an abundance of food.

Directions:

Hungry Point is located at the north end of Mitkof Island adjacent to Nordic Drive. The point is an easy .75-mile walk from downtown (one way) or drive to a small diagonal parking area that is located on North Nordic Drive about 1/8 mile south of the point. Avoid blocking access to homes and private drives that are adjacent to the parking area.
